Second Self, Beethoven Resurrection

4K Video with live orchestral accompaniment (90 mins)

A magical-realist documentary, a speculative ghost story, an improvised, slow-motion disaster movie.
A film by Hugo Glendinning & Tilly Shiner, with an original score & composition by Sami El-Enany.

Second Self follows the journey of Beethoven’s washed-up ghost through the streets of London on Brexit night. It’s his 250th Birthday Anniversary and he is after a drink and compensation. The Royal Philharmonic Society only paid him £50 for his famous work ‘Ode To Joy’, the official ‘Anthem of Europe’ and now he’s angry and confused. This music came to symbolise unity and hope, yet what he witnesses amongst the night revellers and ecstatic Brexit supporters is division, hate and chaos. Along the way he encounters a series of strange visions, finally giving him a little hope that music, art and beauty will persist.
